Bullshit Update 5/28/2012

  • For some ODD reason, one of the bolts (that goes into the rear hub) from the rear hubs came off. It died a slow death though.

While driving, I would hear something whining or grinding—I knew it wasn’t a bad bearing for the hubs because they have almost little miles on them so I thought it could have been the center cap for some reason because that’s how it sounds like when I remove & put it in. Eventually, I heard something fly out & bounce around my left quarter panel fender; and it bounced around (while going about 40mph) for a while too. I pulled over & inspected the face of the wheel & it’s not like the center cap flew off or something so it had to be a hub issue since those are pretty much the only . I drove home slowly & disassembled the entire rear left suspension & saw that I was missing one bolt from the hub & unrelated, the toe link was loose as well. Lucky for me, I had a couple of 19mm bolts to use. So I tightened that down  & assembled everything again.

I was so pissed at myself because well, I learned my lesson before and so I double checked & tightened EVERYTHING. So to have a bolt missing & a bolt almost loose made me feel like shit. However, fortunately for me, the hubs didn’t come off the car (thanks to the cotter pin) & the frame didn’t drop to the floor with the wheel & hub flying away.

But yeah, nothing else really going on. I put some handy tools where the spare tire used to be for fixing on the go. Not sure what’s next, kind of taking things as they come at me. Not rushing this build is the agenda for now.

For Sale (S13) Shit:

Anonymous asked: Recently purchased PBM Pro's coilovers looking to adjust the dampening, what would be best for street driving?

Did you purchase them brand new?! Or used?

The reason I ask is because I don’t think they haven’t stocked up on those yet. I wanted them but meh, the extra “low” was just a fanboy thing inside of me. I can go to my desired height with my FA’s.

Anyway, if the coilovers have never been installed there’s still time to properly break them in. Most representatives that I’ve spoken to have told me to wait about a month until you mess with the dampening adjuster.

Which reminds me. IMPORTANT NOTE: Adjustable damping settings should be looked at as a handling adjustment and not for ride comfort. So if you want comfortable coilovers, get your shit revalved for comfort and spring rates to match the dampening. You gotta pay to play.

Back to what I was saying, I’m letting my coils settle in for a month. The springs have already settled in with the new preload settings I applied. And the dampers will be “broken in” in the beginning of June. FA’s factory instructions tell you to go from full soft to full stiff and back which is what I’ve done.

I wish I could tell you how to adjust your coilovers but that’s something you have to do on your own. Go on a test ride from full stiff and go from there. I used to document my dampening settings on my old phone and I think you should too. EDFC, what?

mcuasrisc asked: so wait, you're solemunchies?!?!?!! man I always saw you on the iss forums! You were in The Works right? If I remeber correctly you're one of the guys that really got me into trying to buy a miata haha. anyways its funny how small of a world it is seeing that I'm following your build blog

Yup, that’d be me, haha! What’s your username? I’m actually still in the Works crew. Less active though since our automotive sub forum got merged with the other sub forums. And what’d you end up getting?

So piggy-backing from yesterday’s crown royal bag post on my original blog: found here

I managed to get the old crappy shift boot off & replace it with a crown royal bag. Now I must warn you, MEASURE twice, cut once, thank Jon later.

If you were to look at my cutting, it’s no where near perfect—matter of fact, I would never show anybody the kind of work I did underneath. If the OCD/perfectionist inside of me kicks in heavy, I may cop another bag and redo it.

But all in all, I’m stoked because I may freshen things up with the interior. Currently looking for a complete DCC for the S13 & maybe a new crisp dash along the way. Stay tuned.

Mini update:

For the past week, I’ve been busy working on my semester project. I got most of that done & had some time to get the rear 5 lug on yesterday.

So that nobody asks me: I’m using Z32 N/A tabbed hubs on S13 rear brakes with no splash shields. The reason for no splash shields is because when I went back from Z32 to S13 rear brakes, I forgot to ask the guy to give me those. If you’ve got access to an angle grinder, I’m sure you can cut a part of the shield to accommodate the tabbed part of the hub. So yeah, you CAN run those hubs without Z32 e-brake drums. Just in case those hubs go bad, I plan on keeping my bearings from the S13, lol.

Still haven’t dulled the rear wheels so I’ll be getting on that when I have time to get sandpaper. So yeah, now that most of the parts are on the car now, I have no idea what’s next until I get my hands on another daily. There have been a string of stolen 240’s in the Valley so I gotta keep my car as long as I possibly can.  So I guess the next update will be about boring old quick releases, kill switches, & alarms, haha.

—that’s it for now/a while?

Note to all following this blog: “It’s the little things that count”

When your plans for you S13 include restoring what you can, it’s the little things that matter too.

Wire-wheeled & painted. It was rusted real bad & needed to be rethreaded  so I went ahead and did that lol.
